This past year has been a trying time for small businesses, including those in the beauty industry. The Mitchell Wade Salon in Oviedo rose to the challenge and made its top priority to be the safest salon in Central Florida.

During the shutdown last spring, the Mitchell Wade team came together to create advanced COVID-19 protocols. These protocols included a Barbicide COVID-19 sanitation course, which every employee took before returning to work. In addition, masks are required for anyone inside the salon, each station is spaced at least six feet apart and plexiglass dividers are placed at the front desk and between shampoo stations. Also, clients are scheduled to allow for a 15-minute cleaning time between appointments. Temperature checks are performed on every client and team member as they enter the salon, and everyone visits the handwashing station upon arrival. At the height of the pandemic, the salon did not perform any blow-drying at all, and even today Mitchell Wade offers a No Blow-Drying Day as an extra safety precaution for its more high-risk clientele. We’re All In This Together
Understanding the toll COVID-19 has taken on small businesses, the team at The Mitchell Wade Salon also went above and beyond to support other local businesses and families going through these hard times. They made thousands of dollars worth of donations in cash, services, and retail products. 

The salon partnered with local businesses for its annual Pinktober celebration. Every year, to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Mitchell Wade offers pink hair extensions to its clients and donates all the proceeds to charity. However, this past year, because of the salon’s COVID-19 protocols, the opportunity for clients to get in on the fun was limited. To encourage as much community involvement as possible, the salon asked local businesses if they would like to participate. Mitchell Wade ended up partnering with six other amazing local businesses through the month of October, raising more than $1,000 in donations for the Central Florida Breasties organization, a nonprofit group that provides education and support for women and families facing breast cancer.

“As a salon, sometimes it feels like a small significance to put in pink extensions and donate the proceeds, but after listening to all of these stories and connecting with our community, it’s so fulfilling to do our part for the fight against breast cancer,” says Mitch Eubanks, founder of The Mitchell Wade Salon.

Every holiday season, the salon typically hosts a large raffle drawing for hair-care and beauty products, but this year, the team decided to do something different. They went around to local businesses and assembled five themed baskets – from date night to family night – with a value of at least $300 each. The baskets were raffled off to help promote other small, local businesses that the Mitchell Wade clientele might not otherwise know about. It was a big hit!

So Much to Celebrate
In the midst of all the chaos and philanthropy, The Mitchell Wade Salon still managed to earn some major awards and mark some incredible milestones.

This past April, the salon celebrated its 21st anniversary serving the Oviedo-Winter Springs community. In addition, the salon was once again recognized as a SALON TODAY 200 honoree by Salon Today magazine. The prestigious award is given only to the top-200 salons dedicated to excellence in the United States. The Mitchell Wade Salon was honored for its Pinktober initiative and its adaptation to new and necessary safety and sanitization needs.

“In a typical year, the SALON TODAY 200 invites salons to compete in 11 different best-practice categories, but we knew this year was a challenging one for our audience, and it caused us to adapt our application process to current times,” says Stacey Soble, director of brand content strategy for Salon Today. “We wanted to capture the way these industry heroes were creating ways to generate revenue and support their team members while their doors were closed, help loyal clients with their hair woes while they sheltered in place, and guide their team through the enhanced safety and sanitation requirements as they reopened.”

If you are not already familiar with Mitchell Wade, it’s a salon worth checking out. It is different from salons that offer typical chair rentals because the Mitchell Wade team supports each other. They work together to give their clients the best experience with each team member contributing their own specialties and techniques to fit anyone’s needs. Mitch is also adamant about the need for continuing education. He has (even during the pandemic) hosted classes from educators to teach the team the newest trends and techniques.

The Mitchell Wade Salon is open late most weeknights, Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. for clients who need to come after work, Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. when the week is just too hectic.
