A Local Cupcake Crawl How-To

Featured Photo from A Local Cupcake Crawl How-To

To celebrate her sister Katie's birthday, Lake Mary Life's Rebekah Grier shares how she planned an epic (and delicious) Cupcake Crawl adventure, and where to go around town to get your sweet fix!

Orlando is full to the brim with bakeries and specialty “cupcakeries,” some of which have gained national notoriety through the Food Network channel. So this year, for my baby sister’s twentieth birthday, I had a moment of creative inspiration and devised a special adventure for the cupcake-loving birthday girl - a Cupcake Crawl!

Similar to a bar crawl, our cupcake crawl consisted of several stops at local cupcakeries where we had to try at least one cupcake flavor - and in our case, no same flavor twice! After assembling our list of stops, I planned our route using this website. Out of our original list, we found that several cupcakeries had closed or moved, so if you plan to try your own crawl I recommend calling ahead to each place before you get out on the road. There are loads more places to visit in the greater-Orlando area, but we focused on the Altamonte Springs/Maitland/Winter Park area and found plenty to satisfy our sweet tooth! Here’s our recommendations for where to go and what to try at each:

Bake me a Cake: 710 Orange Ave., Altamonte Springs

Blink and you might miss this cute little shop hidden down the road just past Target and Costco on 434 - but you won’t forget the flavors! Katie chose the chocolate marble cupcake and can we just say...oh my gosh THE GANACHE. Their baker Christina got so excited about our crawl that she also made us try their Grand Marnier cupcake. The orange flavor was just like an orange creamsicle.

Delightful Treats: 990 N. State Road 434, Suite 1120, Altamonte Springs

This little corner bakery tucked away in the Outback Steakhouse plaza off of 434 made it into our top two. Their guava cupcake was the most unique we tried all day and my sister’s favorite! Not too sweet with a little tang from the cream cheese frosting was just what our palettes needed.

Jillycakes: 125 N. Orlando Ave., Suite 105, Winter Park

If you’re an avid fan of Food Network’s show “Cupcake Wars,” you’ve probably seen Jillian Hopke compete in season six, and win! This local girl is bringing big flavors, especially with her apple pie cupcake, a fried cake, rolled in cinnamon sugar, and topped with an apple pie compote. It’s like a churro. But BETTER.

Smallcakes of Winter Park: 1949 Aloma Ave., Winter Park

This now-national franchise also gained some attention after winning “Cupcake Wars.” While their location in Winter Park is not the original, it’s still tasty and serves up mostly mini cupcakes - so you can try more flavors without more calories! We tasted the peppermint hot cocoa and caramel crunch.

B Cupcakes: 3030 E Semoran Boulevard, #196, Apopka

Although it has an Apopka address, B Cupcakes is located near Hunt Club in the Longwood area. They have all the traditional flavors you’d expect, as well as some you might not, such as the sweet potato cupcake, which Katie and I tried. We were hoping for a savory treat, but the yummy cinnamon flavor and cream cheese frosting didn’t disappoint.

At the end of the day, our favorite cupcakes were the Guava, Grand Marnier, and the Fried Apple Pie - but ultimately, it was having so much fun together that was the best part!
