As a journalist, sometimes you hit the pavement just trying to get anyone to give you a quote. And then sometimes you meet amazing people who feed you lots of free food! While writing our 'Eat and Run' food truck feature for the May/June issue, our new associate editor Rebekah Grier was completely blown away by the generosity of Angelo's Italian Kitchen on Wheels who literally fed her one of everything off their menu...

Back in March, while we were preparing for the May/June issues, I had the privilege of meeting three sets of local food truck owners serving up delicious eats all around Central Florida. One of those trucks was Angelo’s Italian Kitchen on Wheels. Owned and operated by Longwood father-daughter duo David “Angelo” and Makayla Calleri, the truck just celebrated its first anniversary and is churning out authentic Italian food by the vat-load.

The first truck to return my call for an interview, I enjoyed every moment getting to know Angelo, Makayla, and Angelo’s longtime girlfriend, Leslie - who handles the business and social media side of things. While setting up our interview, I made sure to let the group know that I would need some photos, but that food was definitely optional, especially considering we were meeting at their home and not an event where they were already preparing food to sell.

Turning the corner onto their street, I immediately noticed the large red food truck parked in the middle of the cul-de-sac, running and ready to serve with Rat Pack music crooning from the speakers. Angelo, Makayla, and Leslie were ready for me, even inviting me into the truck to see and photograph whatever I wanted. They then informed me that they were going to prepare me one of everything off their menu! Talk about perks of the job! “You guys really didn’t need to get the whole truck set up just for me!” I assured them. “Oh, it only takes 30 minutes to warm up,” Angelo assured me with a wave of the hand and a “no big deal” attitude.

Needless to say, I didn’t have to cook dinner that night and my husband, Seth, and I feasted on Italian food for several days. Everything was delicious...and bigger than we could possibly eat in one sitting.


Thinking back to my favorite part of my experience, though, I think that the food wasn’t even the best part. The kindness of Angelo, Makayla, and Leslie blew me away and shed a world of truth on Makayla’s answer to my question about what her own favorite memory is of the food truck, “Us,” she answered quickly. “Our standout memory is us by far. All the jokes, the laughter, the craziness. One minute we’re stressed because we have all these people we need to serve and we’re bickering at each other because food didn’t get out the window or something. But between the craziness and the stress and the laughter, having each other is huge.”
