The City of Oviedo has come up with a beautifully colorful way to say, “Wish You Were Here.” Five postcards – all touting Oviedo’s name and considerable charms – are now for sale at the City’s Development Services Department.

The City of Oviedo has come up with a beautifully colorful way to say, “Wish You Were Here.” Five postcards – all touting Oviedo’s name and considerable charms – are now for sale at the City’s Development Services Department.

The postcard designs were submitted by local creative types in response to a call-to-artists that the City’s Public Arts Board put out in 2019 for a postcard-themed mural at Center Lake Park. The idea behind the mural project was to complement the park’s amenities and help consolidate the venue as a destination spot for residents and visitors.

Oviedo artist Xavier Moss was chosen as the winner from the 10 entries that were submitted, and his completed mural was unveiled to the public at the City’s holiday tree lighting event in December. Xavier’s brightly-hued artwork, which was funded by Oviedo’s Community Redevelopment Agency, has become a focal point at Center Lake Park.

But the Public Arts Board and the City Council didn’t stop with the mural. Instead, they decided to take things a step further by turning the five highest-ranked designs into actual Oviedo-themed postcards to sell to the general public. Five hundred copies of each design have been printed and can be purchased for $1 per card or $5 for all five designs.

“The goal is to create more exposure for the Public Arts Board and to raise funds for future art initiatives,” says Jennifer Webb, who chairs the board. If all the postcards sell, that would translate to $2,500 for Oviedo’s public arts fund.

Besides Xavier’s winning piece, the other printed postcards were created by Christian Stanley, Melissa Rudge, Simona Wigg, and Constance Sartor. Cumulatively, their designs depict landscapes, sandhill cranes, citrus trees, and Oviedo’s ubiquitous roosters. Other visual elements on the cards include high-school football teams and well-known local businesses.

The standard-sized postcards are blank on the back with room to add a stamp, write a few lines, and drop in the mail to a friend or loved one. It’s the perfect way to say “Greetings from Oviedo!
