Rocking The Night Away

If the lead singer of that rock band you’re enjoying looks familiar, it’s because he’s a popular local business owner by day.

R esidential contractor, kitchen and bath design expert, and remodeling professional are just a few of the titles Steve Tedesco, known locally as the owner of Stevens Kitchens in Oviedo, wears each day. But, there’s one more moniker Steve prefers to don after business hours: the lead singer of a rock band!

“I could be having the worst day ever, and then I perform, and I forget all about it,” Steve says.

Escaping reality on stages around the country since the mid-’80s, Steve is an accomplished singer, songwriter, and musician. Currently lead singer and guitarist for Black Canvas – a high-energy rock, pop, and funk entertainment band – Steve discovered his natural musical talent as a child.

“I got my first drum set at the age of 12 and found that music came naturally to me,” he says. “I was able to teach myself how to play by ear, and shortly after completing high school in Vero Beach, I moved to Orlando to become a rock star with my buddy Tony Visconti. More than 30 years later, we’re still performing together with Black Canvas.”

Over those 30 years, Steve toured as a professional musician with numerous bands.

“While I was performing as a full-time musician, I had the opportunity to share the stage with some amazing acts, including The Beach Boys, Miami Sound Machine, Eddie Money, Cheap Trick, and Huey Lewis,” Steve says. “But, some of my fondest memories were made with the people we met in small cities around the country. Strangers invited us into their homes for meals or to put us up for the night, and they always treated us like family. It was an amazing time in my life and I’m so thankful I was able to satisfy my boyhood dreams of living like a rock star.”

Today, Steve has settled into a more traditional personal and professional life as a husband, father, and business owner, but he hasn’t given up his passion for performance. With 15 guitars (which he uses during the holidays to make a music-themed Christmas tree) and a music room filled with instruments in his home, Steve says he won’t stop writing original songs or entertaining anytime soon.

“Music is my escape from reality,” he says. “I need it. I have withdrawals when I’m not on stage regularly – it’s my adrenaline rush. Performing makes me feel like a young person, and it has given me great confidence that has benefitted my current business."

Steve and his friends Tony Visconti, Kenny Smith, and Jeff Bonenfant bring their passion for entertaining to Central Florida stages several times a month at local bars and restaurants including Rock & Brews in Oviedo.

“We love to see the smiles on the faces in the crowd when they hear their favorite song,” Steve says. “Music has such a positive effect on people. We love to play a role in delivering that happiness and escape for others as much as we do for ourselves. I hope our audiences feel that passion come  through when we play.”
