LML's art director Heather Loomis and associate editor Georgia Fojo share their experience of being teachers for a day at Wicklow Elementary School's Teach-In.
There are so many reasons why Heather and I enjoy working at Lake Mary Life Publishing. For one thing, we get to do the things we’re good at. I craft words and Heather designs layouts.
Another reason we feel lucky to be part of the LML family is because we spread the good news in Seminole County and have opportunities to give back to the community – like being fifth grade teachers for a day at Wicklow Elementary’s Teach-In, a program for volunteers to put on their teacher’s hat and share about anything from careers to hobbies to travel experiences.
Heather had a little experience getting up in front of a classroom, but it was my first time and I was nervous! So much so that I made a lesson plan and Heather and I came up with a fun activity, which was of course, the best part. We told the kids the plan – we were going to put them on a sample cover of Lake Mary Life Magazine. They were thrilled! Many of them receive the magazine at home.
The teachers helped us take class photos and while Heather quickly worked designing the cover pages on her laptop, I chatted about how we find stories and our magazine process, and answered questions. Towards the end of class, we passed around Heather’s laptop so the kids could see themselves on a cover layout. We may have created some mild chaos with all the excitement and squeals! Heather and I left that day feeling like it was a success.
Yesterday, we received an envelope filled with adorable thank-you letters from our students at Wicklow. It was such a sweet, thoughtful, and creative way to say thank you and it personally gave me a little boost, a little reminder that I’m special and appreciated!
Thank you for having us, Wicklow Elementary. We appreciate you too!
