In the past, knee and hip replacements were considered major surgeries that required long hospitalization and rehabilitation. But today, the procedures are commonplace and innovations in medicine over the past few years allow for quicker, less-painful recoveries. Locally, residents are taking advantage of such advancements in joint replacement procedures at Hudanich Orthopedics, with offices in Oviedo and Lake Mary.
Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Ronald V. Hudanich opened Hudanich Orthopedics in January, following a successful alliance with Orlando Health Physician Associates. Dr. Hudanich specializes in advanced hip and knee replacements and has conducted more than 2,000 of them since entering his practice.
Moreover, Dr. Hudanich is a pioneer in Mako Robotic Total Hip Replacement surgery through the Direct Anterior Approach. In fact, he is one of the few orthopedic surgeons in Central Florida who is employing the Direct Anterior Approach, something he recently introduced to his patients.
“This type of hip surgery procedure is fairly new,” Dr. Hudanich explains, adding that patients are traveling from as far as The Villages, Melbourne, and Titusville to experience this state-of-the-art technology. “Anterior has to do with the incision. With the anterior incision, there are no restrictions during recovery. Only about 20 percent of surgeons use the anterior approach.”
Because the incision is made on the front part of the hip joint, Dr. Hudanich avoids cutting through muscle fibers. The posterior incision using robotics – in the back of the hip joint – is the most conventional method because the approach is more accessible, but muscle must be cut, increasing a patient’s recovery time. Combining both robotic cutting-edge technology and the Direct Anterior Approach is what separates Dr. Hudanich from many other surgeons.
Using high-tech robotics for knee replacement surgery allows for a more reliable procedure, as well. One of the first surgeons in Florida to optimize robotic-arm assisted total knee replacements, Dr. Hudanich ensures sizing and alignment are not compromised. Studies show this should bode well in the long run.
“Proper sizing and placement have been linked to longer longevity,” he says.
Dr. Hudanich further employs a non-tourniquet application that leads to speedier recovery times, more range of motion, and less swelling and pain. Tourniquet applications are common with knee replacements but have been known to lead to more difficult recoveries.
Dr. Hudanich treats both primary and revision replacements. Revision hip or knee replacements are designed to replace a previous hip or knee implant that has worn out. But it’s not all about the knees and hips. If you’re in need of a rotator cuff repair, are experiencing carpal tunnel syndrome, or need your knee scoped, Dr. Hudanich is your man. He can also help with your back pain, arthritis, tendinitis, and bursitis.
Hudanich Orthopedics is open to patients Monday through Friday and offers same-day and next-day appointments. Along with a dedicated and friendly support staff, Dr. Hudanich’s team includes Physician Assistant Stephen Denny and Certified Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Jamie Marques.
Stephen is an Orlando native and a Boone High School graduate. He holds a bachelor’s degree in applied physiology and kinesiology from the University of Florida and joined Hudanich Orthopedics this year. Jamie has been providing care in the Central Florida area since 2012. After earning a master’s degree in nursing from Florida Southern College, he joined the practice in 2014.
Dr. Hudanich’s team makes it easy for patients by practicing at multiple surgical locations and maintaining several hospital affiliations including Orlando Health South Seminole Hospital, AdventHealth Altamonte Springs, Oviedo Medical Center, Lake Mary Surgery Center, and Alliance Surgical Center.
The Hudanich Orthopedics website allows patients to track their procedures and appointments online via its patient portal, and all new-patient paperwork is also available on the website. Most major insurance plans are accepted, and an up-to-date list is always available online.
Originally from New Jersey, Dr. Hudanich is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who trained in Pennsylvania, earning his medical degree at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed fellowship training at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University before moving to Florida in 2004.
Dr. Hudanich loves to cook and adores German Shepherds. He lives in Oviedo with his wife, Lori, and they have four children.
