Leaving a place better than it was found is the goal of many parents, and Dennis and Kristina Horanic of Lake Forest Family Dentistry are no exception.

Since last year, Dr. Dennis Horanic has been practicing “solar dentistry.” Lake Forest Family Dentistry is the first dental facility in the U.S. to be completely solar powered, and it’s one of the first dental practices in the nation to use real-time sterilization.

According to Dr. Horanic, he has always had an interest in technology and knew he wanted to make the switch to solar early. Doctor Horanic attributes his motivation to his daughter Kaitlyn, to whom he wanted to show his dedication to make the world a cleaner place.

“I wanted to show her how to be a leader and an innovator and not a follower,” Dr. Horanic says. “Hopefully, she will use this as an inspiration to make a positive difference for her planet for her generation.”

In addition to the message it sends younger generations and the obvious environmental benefits, the cost savings are even more noteworthy. If Lake Forest Family Dentistry gets a power bill at all, it’s often around $8. That means a lower cost of services to the patients.

To date, Lake Forest Family Dentistry’s solar-powered facility has saved 83,255.67 pounds of carbon dioxide. That’s the CO2 emissions equivalent of the electricity used to power 5.2 homes for one year.

“You would be floored by how many young people come in and are thrilled that someone of my generation is trying to make a positive difference for their younger generation,” Dr. Horanic says. “They think the solar stuff is very cool and understand the importance of heading in the right direction. Sometimes the biggest changes happen from just planting a seed, and those conversations with younger people may just be that seed.”

Moving forward, Dr. Horanic is confident that Lake Forest Family Dentistry will continue to be on the cutting edge of technology for the benefit of the planet and the practice’s patients.

“It makes it a blast to come into work and have patients and staff that know we are really doing some great stuff both inside and outside of our facility!” Dr. Horanic says.
