A first impression of senior living at Oakmonte Village: refined luxury.
The lobbies and foyers inside Oakmonte Village’s independent-living, private assisted-living, and memory-care living options are tastefully decorated with coordinating rugs, fine furnishings, and glistening chandeliers. But the beauty of the setting is just the tip of the iceberg.
You soon realize that the residents at the 25-acre property – whether they reside in the independent-living villas or private apartments – are quite busy with myriad options for events and activities, both on- and off-site. They could be out on one of Oakmonte Village’s many organized excursions, enjoying live entertainment, or even exploring their artistic side. Recent arts activities for Oakmonte Village’s assisted-living residents, for example, included oil and watercolor painting, woodworking, jewelry making, and more.
Keeping bodies and minds active reflects the focus on wellness that defines Oakmonte Village, says Rachael Guernsey, the executive director of assisted living. The activity schedule is chock full of chair-yoga classes, water aerobics, strength-and-stretch sessions, mindful floor yoga, and regularly scheduled trail walks. At Oakmonte Village’s fitness center, individual training sessions can be arranged, and state-of-the-art exercise equipment is always available.
“We want our residents’ lives to be full and enriched,” says Carol King, sales and marketing director. “There is a lot going on to keep everyone active and engaged.”
In addition to the vast array of art activities and exercise options, social interaction is another area of emphasis at Oakmonte Village. Enriching residents’ lives involves physical, social, spiritual, and intellectual stimulation.
All of Oakmonte Village’s residents can enjoy nightly social hours with cocktails, appetizers, and live entertainment before dinner. It’s a nice chance for all residents to gather and relax as they trade recaps of the day’s adventures. In addition, monthly parties are held to celebrate holidays, seasonal festivities (like Oktoberfest), or other themes like Caribbean Night, which featured a steel-drum player and island-inspired menu. Ice cream socials are common, too, and residents gather for an array of hobbies and interests: Bible study, knitting circles, veterans groups, and a men’s club, to name a few.
Entertainment options at Oakmonte Village abound, from its on-site movie theater complete with popcorn machine to live concerts featuring musicians of all stripes – piano, vocal, saxophone, harp, and so much more. There are games galore, as well, from Bingo and Taboo to trivia games, poker, mah-jongg, Scrabble, and even a Nintendo Wii. Need to unwind after all that excitement? Try the pet therapy sessions.
All activities are designed specifically for each type of resident, whether it’s someone who is living independently, with assistance, or in memory-care housing. Independent-living residents may travel together off-site to a play or to a casino, assisted-living folks might enjoy an outing for breakfast and a movie, and those residents with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease can enjoy a safe, scenic trip around Central Florida in the Oakmonte bus.
“Memory-care residents love the sightseeing trips,” says Rachael. “We always seek out beautiful places to visit, like lakes and other natural scenery.”
Entertainment options are customized, as well. Oakmonte Village has added music therapy to its activities program to reduce anxiety and help residents connect with fond memories of their past. The staff has also noticed that memory-care residents especially enjoy listening to music through headphones – Sinatra, classical, whatever might spark a fond memory.
“It’s familiar and comfortable,” says Rachael.
Oakmonte Village hosts weekly Christian and Jewish services for residents, and even these are tailored to each resident’s individual needs.
To keep minds sharp, Oakmonte Village also offers on-site classes for independent and assisted-living residents in topics like astronomy, the Constitution, iPad operation, ballroom dancing, and lunch and learns with community leaders, presenting residents with new ideas and new skills.
Exceptional activities and event planning are among the countless reasons so many love calling Oakmonte Village at Lake Mary their home.
