Stop the Presses!

If there’s printing that needs to be done at Seminole State College, Kevin Brewer is most likely the person who will make it happen.
Tucked away between the school’s Center for Public Safety and the Science Building sits the Print Shop, where Kevin has worked for 47 years providing printing and copying services to the college’s students and employees. For the past 11 years, Kevin has been the shop’s supervisor.
Recently, Kevin was recognized by Seminole State as a 2025 Alumni Excellence Honoree for his many years of career service to the school and his involvement in campus activities.
Kevin’s journey at Seminole State began well before he began working at the Sanford/Lake Mary campus. He moved to Sanford in 1971 as a middle schooler, and his mother began taking classes at the school, which was known then as Seminole Junior College.
“I remember coming out here in the portables with my mom, and I watched her work hard for her degrees,” says Kevin. “She later taught here for 20 years as an English adjunct professor.”
The Fine Print
After moving away during high school, Kevin came right back to Sanford a week after graduating in 1978 to study building construction technology at Seminole State. While attending classes, Kevin joined the college’s work-study program and found himself in the Print Shop. He quickly worked his way up the ranks to earn a full-time position shortly after graduating in 1985 and has been there ever since.
While Kevin spends most of his time in the Print Shop, he has also dipped his toes in other aspects of Seminole State. From singing in the choir to being the school’s archery club advisor, Kevin’s influence has been felt strongly at the college.
The Alumni Excellence Honoree award that Kevin will receive on October 21st is granted to individuals who have impacted the Seminole State community, contributing to the advancement of the college by exemplifying its core values of integrity, respect, excellence, academic freedom, and learning. For Kevin, his pride in being a Seminole State alumnus has been strong for decades.
“I love wearing my [Seminole State] shirt, because every time I go out to run errands after work, people always come up to me to tell me they went to the school, or they’re about to start,” says Kevin. “I always like to tell them, ‘You’re going to love it; the instructors are fantastic.’ They absolutely care about you and your education here.”
A Jam-Free Career
As Kevin approaches 50 years at Seminole State, he says what keeps him at the school is the flexibility and support he has found while working there. He has been able to balance a quality work life with raising a family, becoming heavily involved with local Scouting America troops, and discovering hobbies such as model building.
“A lot of folks work full time and come home so worn out from their jobs they don’t get to spend time doing things they like,” says Kevin, “but I’ve never had that issue.”
During the decades Kevin has spent at Seminole State, he has seen many changes at the Print Shop and in the school, itself. One thing that has remained constant, he says, is the quality of education and the care every staff and faculty member puts into the college.
“Seminole State College is a great place to start your college career,” says Kevin. “We have a great bunch of professors who care about their students and want them to succeed. I’m glad to be a part of it.”
