Duda Sod

Though summer should be the prime growing season for Florida lawns, many homeowners often notice brown patches, thinning turf, and bare spots at this time of year.

The natural assumption may be to add more water. But that’s not always the solution, says Pedro Mendoza, sod division assistant farm manager with Duda Sod of Oviedo. Many lawn problems aren’t caused by a lack of water.

“It’s actually more likely overwatering, poor drainage, insects, disease, shade, or damage from pets or heavy foot traffic,” says Pedro.

If the grass is soggy, it’s overwatered. If the grass pulls up easily, insect or root damage is probably the issue. And if there are brown or bare areas under trees, the grass needs more sun.

The fifth-generation, family-owned Duda Sod specializes in growing quality sod and turfgrasses that thrive in Florida’s hot climate. Duda Sod – part of Duda Ranches –   serves homeowners and contractors throughout Central Florida and beyond.

Choosing the right variety of grass is also crucial for healthy, lush lawns. For yards that are shaded, Pedro recommends CitraBlue or Seville St. Augustine. Yards with full sun do best with Floratam St. Augustine. For grass that requires less mowing and is resistant to chinch bugs, ProVista St. Augustine is an ideal option.

“Summer is an excellent time to repair damaged areas or install new lawns,” says Pedro.
