Florida Orthopaedic Associates

by Beverly Sorrells

In his 15 years of performing computer-guided robotic surgery, Dr. Stephen Reed of Florida Orthopaedic Associates has witnessed and participated in remarkable advances in medicine.

Dr. Reed’s latest accomplishment is especially exciting – he recently led the first successful cementless Oxford Partial Knee replacement in Central Florida. Developed by the medical device company Zimmer Biomet, the Oxford Partial Knee is the most widely used and clinically proven partial knee system in the world. Unlike a total knee replacement, the partial version is designed for patients with one-sided, medial knee pain.

The new cementless model makes the procedure even more efficient, requiring fewer and smaller incisions and offering patients a shorter recovery curve. Used successfully in Europe for more than a decade, the system has a porous surface that encourages natural bone integration and fits the knee like a glove. Most patients are up and walking on their new knee on the same day as their surgery.

According to Dr. Reed, the ideal candidate for the Oxford Partial Knee is “a bit younger patient with single-knee compartment arthritis or a corrective deformity who still wants to be athletically active.” Candidates should also have strong ligaments and good bone quality.

Board-certified in orthopedics, Dr. Reed was drawn to the field early on for its hands-on approach and ability to deliver quick, measurable results.

“I’ve been in practice for 40 years, and I’m still bringing new technology to my patients,” says Dr. Reed, a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.

Dr. Reed loves helping patients get back to doing the things they love – or, as he puts it, giving them “new wheels.” Beyond reducing pain and restoring function, he also focuses on improving body mechanics to help patients avoid future problems.

Dr. Reed sees patients at the Lake Mary and Orange City offices of Florida Orthopaedic Associates, which has five locations across Central Florida. This innovative group provides comprehensive orthopaedic care and sports medicine for all types of injuries and conditions.
