Central Florida Bone & Joint Institute

Dr. Brian C. Leung, the founder of Central Florida Bone & Joint Institute, knows that people want to be more active these days – and that’s a positive trend. But with increased activity can come hip, knee, and shoulder injuries.
Pickleball, for instance – a popular sport with many health benefits – can also lead to fractures and sprains (as can activities such as tennis, bicycling, golf, and soccer).
“The number of patients we are seeing with hip, knee, and shoulder injuries is growing,” says Dr. Leung. “Our practice, with our two physicians and three advanced providers, is busier than ever. But with specialized training and cutting-edge technology, we still make time for individualized care for our patients.”
Central Florida Bone & Joint Institute, with offices in Lake Mary and Orange City, specializes in sports medicine, minimally invasive total knee, hip, and shoulder replacement, and treatment of the hand, wrist, shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, foot and ankle, and spine. The Institute aims to resolve pain without surgery whenever appropriate, says Dr. Leung, through proper exercise and services such as cortisone injections and platelet-rich plasma therapy.
However, in some cases, surgery is the answer. If pain is keeping a patient from being active, and every other avenue has been pursued, surgery can be a game changer. And fortunately, surgical recoveries are now easier and quicker than ever before.
“We had one patient who had a hip replacement here,” says Dr. Leung. “Within two weeks, he caught a 14-foot alligator!”
Hip replacements today are not the hip replacements of years gone by.
With anterior hip replacement, the surgeon works between the muscles, as opposed to cutting through muscle fibers or detaching muscles and having to reattach them. Dr. Leung says this newer procedure means a recovery with less pain medication, less time using a walker, and less discomfort – with a fuller life ahead for the patient.
Central Florida Bone & Joint Institute has a solution for emergencies, too: its Anytime Ortho Orthopedic Urgent Care. Patients can get same-day appointments or walk-in visits with extended hours, all for the cost of an office visit. Individuals with sprains and strains, broken bones, acute joint pain, and sports injuries can all be seen for a fraction of what it would cost at an emergency room.
