For more than 20 years, Dr. Jonathan Waldbaum has served the Central Florida community as a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist (a physiatrist) with Florida Orthopaedic Associates, treating patients at the practice’s Lake Mary, DeLand, and Orange City offices.

Board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pain Medicine, and Sports Medicine, Dr. Waldbaum treats a wide range of musculoskeletal and neurologic conditions, with a focus on back issues. As a physiatrist, he specializes in tracing hard-to-diagnose pain, weakness, and functional decline to their root causes.

A visit with Dr. Waldbaum is a natural first step for patients dealing with pain issues before considering surgery. His toolkit remains largely nonoperative: nerve and muscle testing, therapeutic exercise, medication, and injections, all tailored to each patient. If surgery does end up being the right path, he works in close consultation with the practice’s orthopaedic surgeons to determine the best next step.

Dr. Waldbaum’s treatment approach centers on restoring normal movement and improving a patient’s quality of life. He achieves this by building real relationships with his patients and identifying the source of their pain before recommending any treatment. Back pain can arise from several different causes, and treatment only works when it’s aimed at the right one.

Patients with chronic low back pain that hasn’t responded to treatment can feel like they’ve reached a dead end, but Dr. Waldbaum says there is reason for hope. While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, many tools are available today that can help most people.

Of the newer treatments available, Dr. Waldbaum is excited about basivertebral nerve ablation, a minimally invasive procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to stop pain signals.

“It allows us to attack a pain generator that we have previously not been able to address through any other means,” he says.

For anyone who has struggled with chronic low back pain and hasn’t found relief, Dr. Waldbaum’s message is simple: It’s worth looking at treatment again.
