School of Rock
by Susan Shalhoub
Wes Simmons, the owner of School of Rock Oviedo, believes in the power of music. It’s something he and his team witness every day with their students.
A recent survey commissioned by School of Rock mirrors what Wes and his staff members have observed in Oviedo. In the survey, nearly 85 percent of parents saw an improvement in their child’s confidence after they began taking music lessons at School of Rock.
Also, more than 76 percent said their children were more comfortable discussing feelings and problems and felt more valued and supported.
“This is a community that gets inspired,” says Wes. “Kids get creative here. There is socialization and teamwork.”
School of Rock – which employs a Song First instructional approach that emphasizes learning by doing – offers lessons in guitar, bass guitar, drums, singing, and keyboard/piano. A weekly lesson is supplemented with a weekly group play experience, ultimately leading to a live performance on a local stage.
“If it motivates and excites them,” says Wes, “we want to capitalize on that.”
Confident performers are one of the goals at School of Rock. Recently, School of Rock Oviedo students performed and won the inaugural Battle of the Bands at the Central Winds Music Picnic Festival in Winter Springs.
